How an Urban IoT Air Purifier Works: Technology, Sensors and Real-Time Data
An industrial air purifier is not simply a larger version of a domestic one. Systems designed for urban semi-enclosed environments must tackle entirely different challenges: far higher air flow rates, heterogeneously composed particulate matter, the need for continuous monitoring and data certification.
Filtration: How Particulate Is Removed
The E-Bufaga filtration system operates in three sequential stages. The first stage (G4 pre-filter) intercepts coarse particles larger than 10 µm: dust, pollen, fibres. This protects the subsequent filters and extends their operational life.
The second stage is the heart of the system: a HEPA H14 filter with a filtration efficiency of more than 99.995% for particles of 0.3 µm — the size that is hardest to intercept (the so-called MPPS, Most Penetrating Particle Size). This stage removes PM2.5, bacteria and the majority of airborne viruses.
The third stage consists of impregnated activated carbons, which adsorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs), NO2 and ozone. This is particularly important in environments close to vehicular traffic.
Sensors: Measuring to Certify
Purification without measurement is blind. The E-Bufaga device integrates an array of optical sensors for particulate matter (laser scattering principle, resolution 0.1 µg/m³) and electrochemical sensors for NO2, CO and O3. Data is sampled every 60 seconds and transmitted via LTE to the Bufaga cloud platform.
Sensors are factory-calibrated in accordance with ISO 13528 and recertified every 12 months at Accredia-accredited laboratories. This ensures the metrological traceability required for use of the data in ESG reports and regulatory documentation.
The Dashboard: How to Use the Data
The Bufaga cloud platform provides the partner with a web dashboard accessible from any browser. Key features include: real-time display of PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 concentrations for each device; historical series exportable in CSV and Excel; automatic alerting by email or SMS when configurable thresholds are exceeded; and pre-formatted monthly reports for the ESG report.
For operators of multi-site networks (commercial chains, parking operators, airport managers), the dashboard aggregates data from all devices in a single view, with drill-down to individual locations.
Maintenance and Operational Life
HEPA H14 filters have an operational life of 6 to 12 months depending on the ambient pollution level. The system automatically monitors pressure drop across the filter and sends an alert as replacement approaches. Maintenance is included in the rental contract and is carried out by the Bufaga technical team without service interruption.
