Sustainable Media: How ESG-Certified Advertising on DOOH Works
The Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) market in Italy is worth approximately €280 million per year and is growing at 12% annually. But a growing share of investors — particularly companies with ESG sustainability targets — are no longer satisfied with audience data alone: they want to know what impact every euro spent actually generates.
What Is Green DOOH
Green DOOH is an emerging category of outdoor advertising where displays are integrated into structures that produce a measurable and certified environmental benefit. This is not simply about panels powered by renewable energy (today considered the minimum standard): Green DOOH also certifies the impact of the physical infrastructure on the environments in which it operates.
The Bufaga model is the most advanced example of this in Italy: E-Bufaga totems host 55" digital displays broadcasting advertising content, while the physical structure actively removes particulate matter from the surrounding air. Each unit is simultaneously a media asset and a certified purification device.
The Revenue Model: How It Works
Advertising revenue generated by Bufaga displays follows the standard programmatic DOOH model (CPM, with costs per thousand impressions between €8 and €15 depending on the location). 40% of this revenue stays with the location partner, 30% funds the maintenance and rental of the E-Bufaga device, and 30% goes to Bufaga for network management and environmental data certification.
For an installation in a metro station with 5,000 daily footfalls, approximately 90,000 monthly impressions are estimated, generating revenue for the partner of €720–€1,350 per month, with zero upfront investment.
Why Advertisers Choose Green DOOH
The marketing departments of major companies are under growing pressure to demonstrate that advertising budgets are consistent with ESG commitments declared in their sustainability reports. Buying space on a standard DOOH network generates no documentable benefit.
Buying space on the Bufaga network, however, allows the advertiser to associate every campaign with a certified volume of PM removed from the air. This data is reportable in the ESG report with the same credibility as carbon credits: generated by IoT sensors, verified by Accredia laboratories and available via API.
Certifications and Reference Standards
The Bufaga network operates in compliance with ISO 16890 standards for filtration efficiency and ISO 14001 for the environmental management system. Air quality data is measured with ISO 13528-certified sensors and verified by Accredia-accredited laboratories. Every impact report is digitally signed and tamper-proof.
